News for the month of July...
Carl and August Larson of Chicago have left a remarkable legacy of fine fretted instruments from a career extending from the mid 1890’s to the early 1940’s. During this period, they produced a wide variety of different styles of guitars, harp guitars, mandolins, mandolas, mando-cellos and ukes under a variety of trade names, such as Maurer, Prairie State, Euphonon, Dyer and Stahl.
The Larson brothers invented some unique design and construction features. Laminated bracing, a system of building tops and backs under tension and a number of other innovations set them apart from other builders.
The Larson brothers work is unique among pre-World War II guitar manufacturers as it represents the only non-industrially produced range of flat-top steelstring instruments that are still widely recognised as being of high-quality and high value. Larson instruments continue to be sought after by musicians as well as collectors for their distinctive tonal quality.
In 2006 a strategic alliance between one of the most highly respected European luthiers, Roman Zajicek of Rozawood guitars and imusicnetworks Toni Götz relaunced the Larson brand, utilising Larson brothers innovations and design concepts so crucial to capturing the unique tone of the old Larson instruments.
Models include the Stetson, Maurer , Praire State and Stahl, price range from £ 995 to £1995 rrp.

From Aria's superb FA series of jazz guitars, the stunning FA77 archtop, re creates the essence of those early years of violin, cello and arch top guitar builders, where the creation of articulate and responsive acoustic archtop guitars, was a communion of art and science.
With a soundboard constructed from only the finest handpicked solid sitka spruce, the FA77 also features a double-bound body of figured maple for the back and matching sides that visually and sonically compliment the top, and which looks stunning with traditional styled, bound f-holes. With maple also the chosen wood for the set neck, this stunning model delivers a sustain and tonal quality that's vibrant and expressive, both acousticalliy and when electrified.
Aria's FA series has been the instrument of choice for many famous players, including Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Larry Coryell and Jim Mullen.
From the large headstock with gold plated tuners, silky smooth ebony fingerboard with distinctive, inlaid split-block position markers, and 17in body, the FA77 is a delight to perform with, looking the part, trimmed with an adjustable, ebony bridge and floating ebony tailpiece.
The single gold covered pickup is mounted to the end of the fingerboard and the single volume and tone are mounted to the scratchplate, ensuring that the solid top is free to vibrate without hindrance.
The FA 77 is an ideal guitar for jazzers looking for something special, with a clear mellow, acoustic sounding amplified tone.
